The news of the death of Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain rugby league great Rob Burrow on 2nd June 2024 sent chills through my body. Rob, who passed away at the age of 41, had been battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND) since his diagnosis in late 2019. His journey, captured so profoundly by BBC Breakfast News and other media, has been a source of great inspiration for many, including myself. Rob’s life epitomised perseverance, determination, and the power of the human spirit to rise above adversity.

I have been closely following Rob’s story through interviews and updates on BBC Breakfast particularly. Watching him recently engage with young children during their rugby training sessions moved me to tears. His ability to inspire despite his circumstances is a testament to his indomitable spirit. My sincere condolences go out to his wife Lindsey and their children. I fervently hope that a cure for MND is found soon.

MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. There is a 1 in 300 risk of getting MND across a lifetime. It can affect adults of any age, but is more likely to affect people over 50. (source MND Association)

As the cool, Algarve breeze mingled with the rhythmic sounds of the waves, there I was, a reflective soul from a relatively small town in Southwest England, finding solace by the sea. It was late, around 7 PM, just days before the curtain would fall on 2023. This wasn’t just a stroll; it was a journey, a time to ponder the past and plan for the future.
